The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) is an international non-profit organization that seeks to realize a peaceful world where human rights, health, and environment are protected by women from all over the world uniting despite the “wall” of languages and cultures and setting women’s involvement in society forward, with Christianity as the foundation. The association began in London, England in 1855, and approximately 25 million people, from 125 countries and regions including Japan, are active in it.

The Japanese YWCA was established in 1905 and is a pioneer of Japanese NGOs. It now has 25 local, independently-operated associations from Hokkaido to Kyushu. In the Kansai area; the local associations include the Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe YWCA.

YWCA is a NGO that once again gives back power (empower) to people, such as women, children and elderly, who were taken away their powers and put down as weak ones. With the world-wide network of YWCA, the association is inclusively tackling various issues, such as those of peace, non-violence, gender and poverty in a global perspective.

About Osaka YWCA

Osaka YWCA was found in 1918.

The Osaka YWCA was founded in 1918. Its achievements throughout the years include providing quarters for working women, youth development, social welfare, international understanding, peace, human rights and women’s independence. Especially in the field of Japanese language education, the association has played a pioneering role, such as training Japanese language teachers before any associations in the 1960s, when a remarkable internationalization was taking place. The achievement of training Japanese language teachers for over 40 years is what keeps the level of Osaka YWCA’s Japanese language education at its highest.

Osaka YWCA Philosophy

Based on the spirit of Christianity that “all people are equal in God's eyes,” regardless of race, nationality, class or religion, we strive for realizing a peaceful society where all the people can be themselves and live their lives.

Basic principles:

  • Actively take part in order to realize peace by promoting non-nuclear and non-violence.
  • Recognize diversity, grow through meeting people, and train talent who take on making a change.
